MACTEC AWARDED NBA ARENA TESTING/INSPECTIONS CONTRACT

CHARLOTTE, NC, Oct. 24, 2003 -- MACTEC Engineering & Consulting (MACTEC E&C; www.mactec.com) has been awarded a contract to provide construction materials testing and special inspection services during construction of the Charlotte Arena, which will be the 2005 home of the Charlotte Bobcats, the new NBA franchise team. MACTEC Charlotte Office Manager Mark Smith made the announcement.

The $165.5 million multipurpose arena, being built by the City of Charlotte, will also be home to the WNBA's Charlotte Sting and will host college basketball games, concerts and shows. When completed, the arena will provide general seating of 18,500 for basketball, 15,000 for hockey and rodeo, and have 60 luxury suites.

According to Smith, key services the firm is providing include:

  • Development of a testing and inspection plan.
  • Coordination of required tests and impacts.
  • Performing tests and inspections during construction of the project to meet testing/inspection requirements of Chapter 17 of the North Carolina Building Code, 2002 Edition.

"We provided geotechnical services for the City of Charlotte during the evaluation of another potential arena site so we're pleased to be working with the city now on this important project," Smith said. "We'll be testing and inspecting a wide variety of project systems, which include underground drainage, caissons and retaining walls, structural steel framing, roofing, sidewalk paver systems, masonry and fireproofing."

MACTEC, based in Alpharetta, GA, is a $410 million environmental, engineering, construction management, and infrastructure services firm with 3,500 employees in over 100 offices nationwide. The firm has operated in Charlotte since 1953, serving a wide variety of public and private sector clients.
