SDR FORUM'S SMART RADIO CHALLENGE KICKS OFF CONTESTANT TRAINING

NATICK, Mass., Aug. 4, 2006 -- A three-day training session for participants in the SDR Forum's first Smart Radio Challenge got underway today at the corporate headquarters of The MathWorks, headline sponsors of the Challenge - a worldwide competition in which student engineering teams design, develop and test a software defined radio (SDR) or a cognitive radio.

In all, 43 student teams from 12 different countries are registered in Smart Radio Challenge '07, and students from as far away as Pakistan are attending the current training sessions. Registration ended June 15, and teams must submit proposals specific to a Forum-defined problem by September 30; qualifying teams will be announced at the SDR Forum's annual Technical Conference in November and will then have 10 months to complete their projects.

In addition to training the student engineers, The MathWorks - a leading developer of technical computing and model-based design software for engineers and scientists - is also providing access to its MATLAB® and Simulink® software throughout the competition. The company is also donating funds to the SDR Forum, some of which will be used in monetary grants to the student teams and their university departments.

"We are very grateful to The MathWorks for playing host and mentoring the talented students participating in our Smart Radio Challenge," said Allan Margulies, the SDR Forum's executive director. "The MathWorks' extensive, generous support is invaluable and will play a major role in the success of the competition and, in turn, the future development of software defined and cognitive radio."

<>The SDR Forum also announced three new sponsors for the Challenge - Texas Instruments, Altera, and Lyrtech - joining The MathWorks, Xilinx, Zeligsoft, and Synplicity. The Forum is also accepting additional sponsorships from companies and government agencies worldwide.

More details about the Smart Radio Challenge can be found on the competition website, www.radiochallenge.org.
