NETWORK BOX GATEWAY DEVICE AND MANAGED SECURITY COMBINE TO PROTECT CUSTOMERS FROM VULNERABILITY IN INTERNET EXPLORER

HOUSTON, Dec. 22, 2008 -- When Microsoft issued a security advisory last week in response to reports of a "zero-day" vulnerability in Internet Explorer 7 and earlier versions, Network Box - a worldwide managed security company - was well prepared to protect its customers from the potential dangers of malicious programs infecting their computers.

One way was through Network Box's own unique appliance, a managed UTM device that uses HTTP AV scanning to intercept and block malicious payloads at the edge of the network gateway - before they reach client computers and exploit the vulnerability in Internet Explorer. Within minutes after the attack began, Network Box verified that HTTP AV scanning was enabled on each customer's gateway device and alerted customers to make sure their internal network computers were configured to pass all HTTP requests through the device.

"Only a managed service can offer such peace of mind," said Pierluigi Stella, CTO of Network Box USA, the American arm of Network Box Corp.

Network Box also provided another solution exclusive to a managed security service; it pushed out anti-virus and malicious payload signatures within minutes after being developed by the company's anti-virus partner, Kaspersky Lab.

"Because the vector of this kind of attack is within Internet Explorer itself, attackers can vary their payload to a great degree, making it impossible for generic identification of the payloads delivered through this vulnerability," Stella added. "Accordingly, specific signatures must be developed on a case by case basis, so we maintain a constantly changing defensive shield against these constantly changing attacks."
