BERRYMAN & HENIGAR AWARDED DESIGN CONTRACT FROM CITY OF MARYSVILLE

SEATTLE, WA, Jan. 10, 2001 -- Berryman & Henigar has been awarded a $400,000 contract from the City of Marysville, WA for permitting and designing a major portion of the sewer system. Scott Kvandal, CEO of Berryman & Henigar, made the announcement.

The City of Marysville, pop. 20,680, is located in Snohomish County, 35 miles north from Seattle. Berryman & Henigar is permitting and designing a mile and a half of 18-inch gravity interceptor sewers. There are a number of wetlands, salmon habitat and environmental permitting issues that Berryman & Henigar is addressing as part of the project. Construction is slated to begin sometime during the third quarter of 2001.

"We're conducting a habitat survey along the alignment and surrounding area and are going to bore and jack under two streams in order to protect salmon ," said Gary Bourne, Berryman & Henigar Regional Manager. "Because the groundwater table is above the sewer elevation and soils are coarse sands along the entire alignment, dewatering is an important aspect of the project." Dewatering will probably be accomplished by a series of well points and pumps, added Reed Kelly, Berryman & Henigar's project manager.

Berryman & Henigar is identifying the best management and least intrusive methods for crossing open water areas. These include preparing a replanting plan, drawings and specifications for wetland and stream crossings. Bourne said Berryman & Henigar is working closely with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Snohomish County and the City to ensure consistency with permit requirements.

Berryman & Henigar is also coordinating environmental permitting and assessment efforts. These include a SEPA (State Environmental Policy Act) checklist, which addresses soils/erosion control, surface and groundwater quality, wetlands, wildlife and traffic control; Endangered Species Act, Section 7 Biological Assessment; JARPA (Joint Aquatic Resources Permit Application), NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit, and a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).
