BERRYMAN & HENIGAR WINS STORM DRAIN PROJECT FROM CITY OF BENICIA

PLEASANTON, CA, March 16, 2004 -- Berryman & Henigar has been contracted by the City of Benicia, CA to provide engineering services for a major storm drain project. Scott Kvandal, president of Berryman & Henigar, made the announcement.

Benicia, population 28,000, is located about 30 miles northeast of San Francisco. According to City Engineer Michael Throne, P.E., the project consists of a dry weather/first flush flow diversion pump station and submerged gravity outflow, which will replace a corroded and plugged storm drain outflow.

"We're diverting all dry weather flows around and away from the marina, which, with 350 boat slips, is used year-round and is one of our most important waterfront attractions," Throne said. "In winter, when we have lots of storms, we'll have a new overflow system in place to afford flood protection and which will better treat stormwater."

Throne added that in addition to stormwater, the City's current system collects water that gathers in springs and seeps, irrigation water, and takes it all down from the hills through the stormwater system and into the Carquinez Strait.

"When the storm drain project is completed later this year, we'll achieve a higher level of water quality control into the Carquinez Strait and San Francisco Bay," he said.

Throne said the project also includes installation of oil and debris separators that will comply with Regional Water Quality Control Board discharge requirements.
