BERRYMAN & HENIGAR GARNERS DESIGN CONTRACT FROM CITY OF LA MESA

SAN DIEGO, Calif., April 12, 2000 -- The City of La Mesa, CA has awarded a design engineering services contract to Berryman & Henigar. Scott Kvandal, P.E., Executive Vice President, made the announcement.

The City of La Mesa, pop. 59,000, is located about 15 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. Berryman & Henigar will be preparing plans, specifications and construction documents for an extensive sanitary and storm sewer improvement project.

"Some of our sewer system dates back to the early 1920's and some of the old concrete pipes were installed between 1912 and 1947. They have a plastic liner that gets pushed in with ground water or roots, making it very difficult to clean and maintain," said Driss Elwardi, the City's senior civil engineer. "This year we'll be replacing 6,200 linear feet of sewer pipe. Within 10 years we hope to replace the remaining 72,000 feet."

Sewer pipe construction is slated to begin this summer and will cost between $900,000 and $1 million.

Berryman & Henigar is also designing sewer system improvements between Lemon Avenue and La Mesa Boulevard, and for the 7000 block of Pearson Street.

"The current sewer alignment has lots of angle points, twists and turns beneath residential dwellings and a convalescent complex," said Keith Gillfillan, P.E., who is supervising the project for Berryman & Henigar. "The new design will straighten the sewer line, which will help to alleviate any potential sewage overflow and backups. Extensive root intrusion on Pearson Street has also led to private property damage which will also be mitigated."

Another major portion of the design project is developing a design alternative that will either incorporate or replace a 60" corrugated metal pipe (CMP). When completed, the CMP will be able to accommodate a 100-year storm event.
