BERRYMAN & HENIGAR GARNERS CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT SERVICES CONTRACT FROM CONTRA COSTA COUNTY

PLEASANTON, Calif., Aug. 29, 2001 -- Contra Costa County, CA has awarded a two-year contract to Berryman & Henigar. Construction costs are estimated to be $5 million.

The firm's Pleasanton office will be providing turnkey construction management services to the county's Public Works Department. Scott Kvandal, president of Berryman & Henigar made the announcement.

Contra Costa County is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, about 20 miles northeast of San Francisco. Major cities include Concord and Walnut Creek. Key services to be provided by Berryman & Henigar include field observation, resident engineering, utility and permit coordination, construction administration, certified payroll review, site visits, and a public awareness program for the county's rubberized asphalt overlay and cape seal projects. The overlay projects are slated to be completed in November.

According to Mike Carlson, who heads up the county's Construction Division, Berryman & Henigar was selected because of the firm's extensive experience in rubberized asphalt design and construction.

"We were one of the first counties in Northern California to embrace the technology back in 1976 but it's still not used widely in the region," Carlson said. "However, the technology has improved measurably over the past few years and we're using rubberized cape seals for surface treatments in Walnut Creek and for overlays at nine different sites countywide."

Carlson added that rubberized products such as cape seals are proving very cost-effective for the county.

"It's a superior product that costs more upfront but lasts longer and reduces maintenance costs," he said. "But inspection and construction management is absolutely critical to ensure its viability. Without proper inspection, the useful life of the material is reduced - that's why Berryman & Henigar's role is important in this first phase."
