BERRYMAN & HENIGAR SELECTED BY HUNTINGTON BEACH TO DESIGN SEWER LIFT STATIONS

SAN DIEGO, CA, Dec. 5, 2001 -- Berryman & Henigar has been selected by the City of Huntington Beach, CA to provide design services for the City's sewer lift stations. Scott Kvandal, president of Berryman & Henigar, made the announcement. The contract allows for fees up to $750,000 per year, earmarked for the design of one to two lift stations per year. This represents a potential fee of $2.25 million over three years.

Huntington Beach, population 190,000, is located 35 miles southwest of Los Angeles. The City's sewer is transported by gravity through sewer pipes. Since Huntington Beach is flat, it's necessary to 'lift' the sewer to a higher elevation to continue its route to the Orange County Sanitation District.

According to Todd Broussard, Huntington Beach Principal Civil Engineer, many of the City's existing sewer lift stations were built more than 30 years ago and are at the end of their design life.

"With the recent implementation of a citywide sewer fee, the City now has the funds necessary to rehabilitate or replace these lift stations," Broussard said. "Depending on the design's complexity, the City will either rehabilitate or replace up to two lift stations per year."

Broussard indicated Lift Station 'D' was chosen to be replaced first due to its proximity to the Huntington Harbour, Warner Pond and Bolsa Chica area.

"This lift station is one of the most active in the City. It will also be one of the more challenging projects as the existing lift station must remain operational at all times during construction, coupled with its location in an environmentally sensitive area," Broussard said.

Lift station design will take about six months; construction is slated to begin next autumn.
