KORNBERG ASSOCIATES ARCHITECTS DEVELOPING PROJECTS FOR UC-RIVERSIDE, UC-DAVIS

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 22, 2008 -- Kornberg Associates Architects (www.kornberg.com) has been retained to provide architectural/design services for the University of California at Riverside (UC-Riverside) and the University of California at Davis (UC-Davis). Ken Kornberg, president and founder, made the announcement.

The firm is currently working on three UC-Riverside projects:

  • Stem cell core facility/Norman Keen Hall - Existing offices and open/covered space is being converted into labs, equipment/support areas and offices for stem cell research funded by a grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Research.
  • Batchelor Hall Detailed Project Program - Renovation of the 40-year-old building. The firm is using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software that resulted in being able to cost-effectively add an additional 10% assignable space and increase the net to gross ratio from 52% to almost 60%.
  • Psychology Building - Creating a suite of sound-proof and RF-shielded testing rooms.

Kornberg is also designing Research Building II at the Sacramento-based UC-Davis Medical Center (UCDMC). The project will renovate all three floors of the building, and convert it from a clinical lab building to research labs and offices for the School of Medicine. The firm also spearheaded negotiations with the UCDMC fire marshal to renovate the building under provisions of the 2007 California Building Code, establishing precedents for renovating older existing lab buildings on campus.

Other key features:

  • Open wet-bench laboratories.
  • Specialized support spaces for tissue culture, electrophysiology and microscopy.
  • Renovated office space for researchers
  • Centralized core facilities to be shared by multiple lab groups, including a freezer storage room, confocal microscope room, dark room and constant-temperature room.

These have included pharmaceutical and biomedical research labs, clinical care facilities, medical centers, office/administrative buildings, conference centers and schools.
