MACTEC ACQUIRES PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE, EQUIPMENT FROM SHONKA RESEARCH ASSOCIATES

GRAND JUNCTION, CO, Jan. 25, 2008 -- MACTEC, Inc. (www.mactec.com) has acquired proprietary software and equipment from Shonka Research Associates that is expected to generate considerable cost savings for clients nationwide.

Marietta, GA-based Shonka Research Associates is a privately-held firm founded in 1987. The company provides a wide variety of nuclear engineering, health physics and radiological engineering and information technology consulting services.

According to MACTEC Vice President/Director of Radiological Services Steve Rima, CHP, CSP, the equipment the firm purchased will be used to service both private and public sector clients. Known as the SS-Series of detectors, these are scanning spectrometers that can be mounted on a variety of platforms or as fixed instruments and are used for surveying contaminated material on a conveyor. It also only takes one or two people to operate the detectors.

"The equipment and software is ideal for nuclear facilities," Rima said. "For example, if you're doing a radioactive site cleanup, the volume of radioactive waste can be reduced by 50 percent or more - this can save companies millions of dollars. Waste disposal costs are also minimized compared to conventional methods like truck monitoring."

MACTEC, based in Alpharetta, GA, is a $505 million environmental, engineering, construction management, and infrastructure services firm with 3,000 employees in over 90 offices nationwide. The company has operated in Colorado since 1994. Additional Colorado offices are located in Golden.
