February 2010 : TechLinks

LARRY WHITE, SVP-CIO, MACTEC, INC.

MACTECCatching up with Larry White was not as difficult as it would have been if he had been back in his home state. At the time we were talking, the northeast was being pelted with a record snow storm and Larry was pleased to be in the South.

Our brief conversation confirmed the high value Larry places on having direct connections with other IT professionals. “Peers are absolutely my best source of information, especially when we are one-on-one. In front of a group, you might hear anything, but direct personal communication is a great help to me.”

Projects on his hot list are the ones he has most interest in discussing. How to leverage SharePoint to deliver the optimum advantage to his business units is on top of his stack. He is considering alternatives on how to prepare for the increased demands on his infrastructure once success is realized with SharePoint.  As more gets done in that environment, how can he make sure the infrastructure is ready?

White said they are also paying some attention to cloud computing. Like most organizations, they accept that the cloud is probably a part of their future at some point. Looking, listening, learning and planning are all in order at this stage.

“We are an engineering and construction company and we need to provide more services to our construction unit.   Oracle Financials and Primavera are two significant elements of our information environment.  These will be the core for any other tools we add to our system, and we want to find the ones which will be most supportive of our construction folks. I am interested in learning what others have found in this area.”
