MACTEC WINS NSC PERFECT SAFETY RECORD AWARD

ALPHARETTA, GA, April 21, 2005 -- The National Safety Council (NSC) awarded MACTEC a 'Perfect Record' safety award for its safe work practices associated with the decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) building at the Rocky Flats complex, about 16 miles northwest of Denver, CO. Bruce C. Coles, president of MACTEC Development Corporation and chairman & CEO of MACTEC, Inc., the holding company (www.mactec.com) - made the announcement.

MACTEC employees worked 517,562 hours without an injury requiring a day away from work, restricted duty, or an employee being transferred to another job due to an occupational injury or illness preventing their performing normal duties.

The facility contained radiological contamination and hazards having served as the primary facility for plutonium production of weapons components and recovery of plutonium from recycled materials and residues. One of the rooms in the building was designed as a vault and converted to a pump room for plutonium processing. More than 30 years ago the pumps failed and contaminated the room. The door to the room was welded shut and the room was sealed for several decades due to the high levels of contamination.

Key tasks undertaken by MACTEC on the project included:

Developing, implementing and maintaining the Radiological Protection Program (including all radiological engineering and controls), Health & Safety Plan, Demolition Plan, Quality Assurance Plan, as well as required training programs.
Preparing work plans necessary to safely perform the building D&D.
Dismantling process support systems, safety systems, utilities, equipment, piping, electrical systems, and interior partitions, concrete block walls, and concrete foundation slabs.
Using advanced hydrolasing decontamination technology and specialized water treatment system, recycling over a million gallons of water with very little waste.
Removal, packaging, and disposal of asbestos containing materials used in process equipment insulation and in building walls, ceilings, and roof.
Size reduction, packaging, and characterization of contaminated equipment and structural materials.
Developing and performing turnover surveys of decontaminated structures in preparation for final status survey prior to building demolition.
Developing and performing under slab characterization and soil decontamination.
Demolition of building structures and concrete stack.
Backfill and site restoration.
