MACTEC GARNERS $1.2 MILLION CONTRACT FOR WATER RESEARCH PROJECT

SAN DIEGO, CA, May 27, 2005 -- MACTEC Engineering & Consulting (MACTEC E&C) has been retained by the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project Authority (SCCWRP) to provide environmental monitoring services. Bruce C. Coles, president of MACTEC E&C and chairman & CEO of MACTEC, Inc., the holding company (www.mactec.com) - made the announcement.

SCCWRP is a joint powers agency focusing on marine environmental research. MACTEC Senior Scientist Jay Shrake is spearheading the project, which is being managed by Senior Geologist Sean Porter and Staff Engineer Richard Rusnak.

Key tasks include providing wet weather sampling services to support SCCWRP's development and evaluation of watershed models in Southern California. Shrake is currently managing the water quality characterization of a number of major watersheds in Southern California. These watersheds are characterized by various physical and biological attributes, including geology, land cover, size, and slope. Over 20 sites have been selected in San Bernardino, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego County that represent the range of factors that are assumed to affect variability in loadings from natural systems.

Flow-weighted automated and pollutagraph sampling in remote high altitude unlined and unrated streams are relatively unknown. Shrake is leading a team that is pioneering new techniques of sampling using previously successful techniques in Simi Valley, CA of paired burn and pristine sites after last year's wildfires in remote watersheds. Sampling will occur over a two-year period, and data will be compiled into a database for analysis and dissemination. This task will assimilate the results of the field data and create tools that can be used in the development and implementation of TMDLs, watershed plans, watershed models, and other management measures.
