Orca Introduces World’s First Multi-Standard TV Receiver Chip for "TV-Anywhere" Application in Tablets

POWAY, CA, Feb. 4, 2013 – Orca Systems, Inc. (www.orcasystems.com), a fabless RF semiconductor company based in Poway, Calif., will be demonstrating a complete reference design at the 2014 International CES (Jan. 7-10), enabling consumers to watch live TV freely anywhere in the world with their mobile devices like tablets and smart phones.

The ORC5620 is a single-chip, CMOS-based, hybrid TV tuner with a software configurable demodulator that can receive analog and digital signals from either terrestrial or cable networks, worldwide. The chip supports a broad range of analog/digital standards including NTSC/PAL/SECAM, ATSC/QAM, DVB-T/C, DTMB and ISDB-T that can be programmed on-demand in the field, thereby enabling OEMs to have a single global hardware platform. The single chip design, architected with a digital intermediate frequency (IF) interface between the tuner and demodulator, improves the reception performance and reduces power consumption. The compact receiver chip requires only one crystal, eliminates external memories, and reduces the PCB area resulting in a competitive Bill of Material (BoM).

"Tablet manufacturers are looking for ways to differentiate their offerings" said Guruswami Sridharan, CEO and founder of Orca Systems. "ORC5620 enables the consumer to receive live free TV in their tablets worldwide. It is a whole new experience for the mobile consumer."

The chip is sampling now with mass production ramp beginning in Q2 2014. A complete set of design materials – including schematics, layout gerbers, BoM list, firmware and GUI evaluation software is available now.

The Orca suite (LVH2450) is in the Central Tower of the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly the Hilton). CE Manufacturers, OEMs/ODMs, Ecosystem Partners and Application Developers interested in booking a meeting should contact sales@orcasystems.com.
