COGNITIVE RADIO TECHNOLOGY IS SUBJECT OF WORKSHOP IN SAN FRANCISCO

DENVER, CO, April 4, 2006 - Emerging "cognitive radio" technology is the subject of a day-long workshop the Software Defined Radio Forum will conduct April 10 at the Radisson Miyako Hotel in San Francisco. The workshop will be followed by the Forum's general meeting (April 11-13), at which SDR development leaders from around the world will gather to discuss key issues related to the technology and its deployment.

"Cognitive radio is the exciting hot-button technology of tomorrow, poised to dramatically impact the wireless communications industry and benefit the daily lives of those it serves," said Allan Margulies, the SDR Forum's executive director. "People today use their PDAs like a portable brain, and cognitive radios - about the same size as today's PDAs - will extend this capability. That's because these radios essentially think for themselves; they can pick up information about their environment just by being with you - sensing what needs to be done that involves radio transmission and then acting on that information."

The cognitive radio workshop will include sessions on commercial uses, applications, software and hardware architectures, standards, and regulatory and safety issues. Joe Mitola III, the noted researcher who coined the term "cognitive radio" (and also "cell phone on steroids") will speak on the expanding need for this important technology in the ever-growing age of information overload.

The three-day general meeting will entail focused plenary sessions that address the business aspects of the SDR Forum, management of work, and approval of documents. Highlights will include a technical plenary, "Cellular Handsets - Evolving to SDR," presented by Bill Krenik, wireless advanced architectures manager at Texas Instruments.
