SDR FORUM WILL HOST WORKSHOP ON FREQUENCY-AGILE RF TECHNOLOGIES FOR COMMERCIAL AND DEFENSE APPLICATIONS

DENVER, CO, Nov. 20, 2007 -- The Software Defined Radio (SDR) Forum, (www.sdrforum.org), a nonprofit international industry association supporting the advancement of reconfigurable wireless technology, will host an all-day workshop on frequency-agile radio frequency (RF) technologies for commercial and defense applications. It will be held Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, in Tampa, Fl, in conjunction with the Forum's general meeting (Jan. 14-17), where SDR development leaders from around the world will gather to discuss key issues related to the technology and its deployment.

The workshop will explore the requirements for radio systems supporting operation over a wide range of spectrum bands - in both the commercial and defense markets - and define the state-of-the-art in RF and intermediate frequency (IF) technologies that address those requirements. Featured will be presentations by vendors in focus areas such as RF integrated circuits, broadband A-to-D and D-to-A devices, agile RF and IF filtering technologies, and radio system providers delivering agile RF solutions. The workshop will further explore whether agile RF technologies developed for commercial markets can be leveraged into defense applications, and vice versa.

"The ability of a radio to operate over a wide range of frequencies has always been a grand challenge in realizing the vision of software defined radio," said Lee Pucker, CEO of the SDR Forum. "Through this workshop the Forum hopes to define what the state of the art is in addressing this challenge, allowing software defined and cognitive radios to communicate on available networks and using available spectrum based on a policy decision, not a technology limitation."

Speakers at the workshop will include Bruce Fette, chief scientist for General Dynamics C4S and chair of the SDR Forum Technical Committee, and Preston Marshal, program manager at the U.S. Defense Department's DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). Additional highlights will be keynote speakers from Alcatel-Lucent ("Multi-standard Base Stations Enabled by Cognitive Radio Modules") and Motorola ("Frequency-Agile RF Technologies in Commercial Communications"). There will also be a panel discussion; product demonstrations; and presentations by BitWave Semiconductor, Datasoft, Paratek, Softronics, Terocelo, Thales Communications, and other leading companies.

According to Pucker, the SDR Forum plans to use this workshop to provide input for a technology report the organization is developing that will be used by its markets and regulatory committees to advance their agendas in the upcoming year.

The Forum's general meeting will include sessions on SDR for commercial, public safety and avionics applications; cognitive radio; research and development; and design process. In addition, focused plenary sessions will address the business aspects of the Forum, management of work, and approval of documents.

Both the workshop and the general meeting will take place at the Doubletree Westshore in Tampa and are open to anyone interested in SDR technology, including non-Forum members.
