LONDON, JUNE 16, 2009 -- Imagination Technologies - a leader in technology for digital broadcast silicon devices - today announced its full support for the Government's outline of a complete action plan for the digital migration of radio by 2015.
Today's recommendations coincide with the continued momentum in the up-take of DAB audio equipment in the UK and around the world. In the UK, around a third of all households already have digital radios. A similar percentage own digital radios in Denmark. Meanwhile, recent announcements from France, Germany, Denmark and Eastern Europe, and the formal launch of DAB digital radio in Australia, mean that the global market for digital radios and digital radio technology is due to take off.
Imagination is the leading provider of digital radio technology. Its processor and communication technologies are used in over 80% of DAB radios. Imagination's continued investment in DAB technology development has been a major contributor to the reduction in the price of digital radios.
Hossein Yassaie, CEO of Imagination Technologies, says: "Digital Britain confirms a strong and clear future for digital radio in the UK and, critically, provides the industry with the concrete timetable necessary for planning technology and product roadmaps with confidence. Imagination technologies took the initiative by developing the world's first commercially affordable DAB chipset in 2002, and we are delighted to see that our vision for a digital radio future is coming to fruition."
DAB's volume share is now at 25 per cent of all UK radio sales. Digital radio now accounts for over 20 per cent of all radio listening, with DAB leading the increase.
