MACTEC, USACE Win ASCE 2010 Project of the Year Award

MIAMI, FL, Jan. 17, 2011 – MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc. and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) were recently honored by the Miami-Dade Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) with the 2010 Project of the Year for their work on the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Headquarters in Doral, FL. Allen Kibler, President of MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc., (www.mactec.com), made the announcement.

As Florida's largest design-build project, this 640,000 sq ft, campus-style facility on a 55- acre site was accomplished utilizing a MACTEC multi-disciplinary team to serve as the USACE quality assurance and construction administration representative for the project.

The project created an entirely new military facility that includes all support facilities and infrastructure for the complex to serve as a stand-alone military command responsible for providing contingency planning, operations and security cooperation for the region that includes Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Cuba and the Bahamas.

As the USACE quality assurance and construction administration representative, MACTEC provided a team of experts in areas including project management, senior engineers, cost estimating, scheduling, administrative support, architects, as well as inspectors in areas including: structural, civil, electrical, mechanical, communications, LEED, safety, information technology, security, and anti-terrorism/force protection. In addition, MACTEC provided document control, performed schedule analysis, tackled pay application reviews, reviewed contractor submittals, as well as performed construction inspection across all engineering disciplines.

The Project of the Year Award honors engineering efforts in research, design, construction, or management. According to Sergio Alfonso, Jr., President-Elect of the ASCE Miami-Dade Branch, it also exemplifies how civil engineers can use their skill to overcome great challenges and develop a project that benefits and improves the community.

The SOUTHCOM project also incorporates unique features like leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED). Through implementing energy and resource saving measures such as efficient HVAC, water efficient plumbing and landscaping, stormwater management through the use of large-scale retention ponds and enhanced commissioning the project is on-track to achieve LEED Silver Certification with the United States Green Building Council.
