Social media has become indispensable in keeping track of what people say about your company, your brand, your products, your competitors. The transformation of the Internet as a social tool means that people everywhere are yakking – and you need to listen to what they’re saying about your business. Social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and blogs are providing new communications opportunities – and challenges.
Company images can be quickly tarnished by digital media – two employees of Domino’s Pizza, for instance, posted a web video of themselves blowing their noses on pizzas. The company quickly uploaded a statement on its web site alerting consumers; 24 hours later their president apologized on video, said the employees had been fired and would face criminal charges.
While the Domino’s Pizza example is extreme, you can avoid or mitigate negative comments (whether true or false) by monitoring your brand via social media. Web chatter circulates at warp speed now – a tweet turns into a blog post and can then become national/international news in a heartbeat.
